secure key distribution by allowing the exchange of a cryptographic key between two remote

parties over a quantum channel, even in the presence of an eavesdropper.


The security is guaranteed by the fundamental laws of Quantum Physics which have established

that the mere observation of a quantum object will perturb it in an irreversible manner and thus

any attempt at eavesdropping will be instantly detected. This key is then used with conventional

cryptographic algorithms to encrypt standard communications. No matter how robust an encryption

algorithm is, its security will only be as good as the security of its key and thus QKD

ensures its unconditional security.

Quantum Key Distribution is a cryptographic technique based on
the laws of quantum information. It enables secure key distribution
between two parties having a prior shared authenticated classical
channel. It guarantees unconditional security.


The word unconditional signifies that eavesdropper possesses
unlimited computational power, whether it be classical or quantum.


The security is ensured on the basis of null results of quantum
mechanics, which are non commutivity and non realism,
signifying that any observation by eavesdropper will cause
perturbation.

A quantum random number generator is a device that utilizes the quantum phenomena to generate true random numbers.


The measurement outcome of the microscopic particles is
inherently random, one such example is beam splitter scheme
where we can consider a photon sent to a beam splitter.


The probability of the photon to travel in transmitted path and
reected path is same i.e. the photon remains in superposition of
both the paths till it is detected in either one of the two detectors
which are placed in the transmitted and reected path respectively
and thus the outcome is purely random
